More Holistic History...
Despite such advances, many people were charmed by Henrick’s approach to massage and gymnastics (he set up a gymnastics school), embedded in his understanding of Western physiology. What became known as Swedish massage, Henrick’s course of therapy distributed from Sweden during most of the 1800’s into the continent of Europe and later the America’s. His Technique was established on what knowledge he had regarding the ancient healing modalities of China, Rome, Greece, and Egypt.
In China, the history of therapeutic massage extends throughout nearly all of China's history. An early document from China, reckoned to be from 1400 BC covers topics such as massage, acupuncture, and moxa (burning herbs for therapeutic objective). Traditional Chinese Medicine; is a holistic infrastructure of curative modalities included dietary therapy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, as well as exercise, have always included massage.
Today TuiNa (coined by the Chinese in the 800’s BC also known as Push and Grasp) is becoming ever more popular in the Western World, as people turn to holistic therapies to treat muscular problems, reduce stress or supply enjoyment and relaxation. Sadly in the twentieth century it became a common place view that massage was a luxury and a privilege of the opulent. Though, in the later part of the twentieth century it came back into main stream with people realising
the value of a healers touch.
Now though Holistic Massage therapies are commonly used and employed in many walks of life; from having massage therapists working in offices, helping athletes, the young and old alike, providing a holistic approach to the body, mind and spirit. As the growth of this industry continues to take seed there are now many opportunities for holistic therapists to treat a wide range of people throughout the whole of the modern world.
It is a culmination of the knowledge of ancient Egypt and Greece and Rome and China, great thinkers and legendry healers, gods or physicians that has allowed the Holistic Therapies of today to be made manifest.
