Clinical Massage & Soft Tissue Therapy

What is Soft Tissue Therapy?

Soft tissue is an encompassing term that refers to tissues that connect, support, or surround other structures and organs of the body. Soft tissue includes all muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, nerves, fibrous tissues, fat, blood vessels, and synovial membranes (joints). To some extent bones are also considered soft tissues but not the main focus or specialism – if something is more structural an Osteopath or Chiropractor may also be needed.

What can I expect within a session?

Chances are that if you’ve seen one of our therapists for Sports Massage or Osteopathy, you will have most likely experienced a few of the advanced techniques they use.

So much more than Massage

Soft Tissue Therapy is a specialism that treats clients with musculoskeletal pain or dysfunction caused by any of life’s stresses. Although sport can be a common factor with many clients, it’s far from being the main issue our therapists deal with, as postural alignment can also play a large part in today’s fast paced desk job society.

Due to the ‘fix it’ clinical nature of this style of massage, there will be postural assessments, myoskeletal alignment, joint assessments, functional muscle testing built into a massage session.

Our therapists will assess-treat-and assess again, this is not necessarily a lay down and go to sleep, relaxing type of massage, often active movement is required on the client’s part as he will target the real source of dysfunction, including: Injury assessment and advanced treatment techniques.

After a treatment in the fullness of time, they will also demonstrate remedial exercise and provide advice to enhance recovery, prevent future injury, improve posture and functionality.

New Client Consultation

If this is the first time we’ve seen you then the therapist needs to take some time to read over your initial consultation form (For that reason we suggest you put as much info about your current and previous health conditions on the consultation form as possible, so we already have an idea of the background to your case before we meet you)

There will be a fair bit of questioning in an effort to understand your habits and movement patterns, as well as past injuries – not matter how insignificant they may have seemed in the past – it can all be relevant.

The first session also requires a fair bit of body reading, with a standing palpation or posture assessment and from that a therapist can proceed with further testing and assessments, followed by treatment. During the first session the therapist can gauge what is needed for any longer term treatment plans that may be necessary.

Following the first session the therapist will most likely need to set the client up on a course of prescriptive exercise and movement. Advising you specific exercises for you to follow at home on your computer or smartphone.

Subsequent sessions, will be known as Follow ups, then continue with the therapists initial treatment plan and we can revise after seeing clients response and feedback to the previous sessions and exercises.
