Sports Massage, how it differs to other massage therapy

We often get athletes and gym enthusiasts asking us to describe Sports Massage and how it varies from other massage techniques including Deep Tissue Massage. Here we explain what makes sports massage unique and why it can be of benefit to everybody. If you’re still not sure, give us a ring and we’ll happily talk with you about the best type of treatment for you.

Sports Massage is a treatment that has been developed for those involved in sporting activity to aid recovery from injury, to prevent injuries from occurring initially and to increase performance. The use of regular Sports Massage  has developed massively within amateur sport in the past decade after being used in professional sport for many decades helping full time athletes through their tough training regimes.

What Is Hot Stone Massage?

Recently, a long-term client came in for a Holistic Massage, and while he waited we chatted about our other, newer, therapies.  He mentioned that he thought that Hot Stone Massage sounded awful – the idea of having “a bunch of rocks dumped on you to warm you up – why not just go home to a hot water bottle!”.  It turned out that he thought that Hot Stone Massage didn’t involve any massage – that it was the application of stones, without any intervention or touch from the therapist.  As this is not the case, I thought we’d better clear the air, and explain a little more about Hot Stone Massage.

Uneven Posture Pain

It may sound obvious that the leg and back muscles are directly connected to one another, there’s an intricate web of muscles, ligaments and tendons that travel through the pelvis and make up the area of the hips and glutes, when you start to move your legs the back muscles start to work as well to keep you straight, balanced and strong. As well as the back and legs being connected via muscles, ligaments and tendons, they are also connected via nerves, which is why people with extreme back pain in the ‘sciatica’ region often state that the pain travels down their legs, more often than not, it’s the muscular tension effecting the freedom of movement in the nerves that travel through the pelvis that causes this discomfort.

Reflexology Explained

Reflexology is a truly holistic treatment which helps to re-balance the body. Originally it started in China around 4000BC and was developed by Dr William Fitzgerald during the 19th Century, he discovered that by applying pressure to certain areas of the body he could relieve pain in other, seemingly unrelated areas.  It is based on the theory that our bodies contain energy which flows through all organs and systems. This energy should be able to travel freely around the body, but occasionally blockages occur when this happens the body becomes out of balance. Reflexology is believed to be able to asses where the imbalance lies and treat the area. Some times it is better to try and treat the whole body at once instead of focusing on one area as an illness may also be affecting other areas of the body including the mind, similarly a condition like stress could have an impact on your body such as the tightening of shoulders.

Pete’s Blog – Sports Massage

Sports MassageHi my name’s Pete; I am a Sports and Remedial Massage therapist of which I obtained my diploma from the London School of Sports Massage. One of the main reasons I chose a career as a Sports Massage therapist was from massaging my friends, family and mainly my partner. They might complain of a sore back or leg and so I started to treat those areas and realised how much the massage had a good affect on their concern.

It’s that time of year again, colds and flu are coming back giving you those groggy, sniffling, bunged up days with no energy and a miserable head. People have always tried anything to make them feel better, some of the weirder ones include wear a necklace of onions, spreading mustard across your chest, putting a hairless dog on your chest…hmmmm…do as you like but you won’t find a better cure than rest, water and taking care of your body. I’ve always found that most complementary therapies don’t work like they say they will, often it’s a placebo effect that encourages healing within the body, yet I can tell you here not only the ones that do but how they work with no nonsense.
