Hi I’m Kirsty, a relatively new therapist at YOU Massage. I’d like to introduce myself to you and provide you with some details of my training, experience and area of interest.
I am a holistic therapist with 15 years experience in working with pregnant women, babies and their partners. I am trained in Pregnancy Massage, Holistic massage, Swedish massage, Reflexology, Shiatsu (specifically for pregnancy), Reiki, Kinesiology (muscle testing) and infant massage. I am also a teacher trainer with the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) and have taught students to instructor level how to teach new parents the art of massaging their babies for nine years. I am involved with the organisation at an international level, specifically within ethics and research. These classes are held in a group setting, similar to a yoga class.
Laura has had a keen interest in health, sport, and exercise for as long as she can remember. Going on runs with her father at the aged of eight, or playing netball for the under tens at primary school.
Laura developed in to a keen athlete playing a wide variety of different sports throughout her teens and early twenties. Her main focus being athletics and netball the latter of which she still plays today.
As an athlete Laura has first hand experience and understands the frustrations of having an injury and wanting to return to pre-injury training and fitness levels.
Laura discovered the benefits of Osteopathy after successful treatment of a long-standing netball injury. Her rehabilitation inspired her to become an Osteopath and consequently she develop an interest in treating sports injuries.
It is often stated “today’s runners are tomorrow’s cyclists” but how much truth is in this phrase? Concern over damage to joints as a result of running does seem to be a common theme runners worry about. As an osteopath I am frequently asked questions such as “am I storing up joint problems for myself later in life?” or “am I going to get arthritis from this running linked injury”.
These are questions most runners will be able to relate to, in this article I will examine the evidence linking running with osteoarthritis and future disability.
I chose to practice massage therapy a few years ago as I was initially intrigued by its simplicity yet profound effect on calming the body and mind. I believe that our bodies have all they need within to heal themselves from the mental trauma and daily stress we put them though. YOU Massage Therapy is a space where you can rest and receive hands-on treatment to encourage your body-mind to realign with its natural state. Having studied and worked in western medical science for over ten years, I know what our bodies get up to during periods of disease. ‘Dis-ease’. So much of this is caused by our lifestyle; rushing around, eating on-the-hoof, fizzy drinks, poor posture, our sedentary routine. There is so much we can do to ease this burden on ourselves.
