Sports Massage

What is a SportsMassage?

Sports Massage is a targeted treatment designed to support your body before, during, and after physical activity. Whether you’re a regular athlete, enjoy the occasional workout, or simply put your body through a lot during your daily routine, it can help you keep moving comfortably and recover from physical demands.

Rather than being focused solely on relaxation, Sports Massage is tailored around how you use your body. Your therapist will consider your activities, training, movement patterns, and any areas that feel tight, tired, or overworked, then adapt the treatment accordingly.

Before exercise or competition, Sports Massage can be used to help prepare the body for movement. After training or activity, it can focus on areas that have been placed under greater strain, helping to ease muscular tightness and support your recovery.

Sports Massage can also be particularly useful when your everyday activities place repeated demands on your body — whether that’s spending long hours at a desk, driving, lifting, standing, or carrying out physically demanding work.

Our therapists may combine Sports Massage with Remedial Massage techniques, such as Soft Tissue Release and Muscle Energy Techniques, depending on what your body needs.

Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports Massage can be adapted to suit your lifestyle, whether you’re regularly training or simply dealing with the physical demands of everyday life.

It may help to:

  • Relieve muscular tension and tightness
  • Support recovery after exercise
  • Improve mobility and flexibility
  • Ease areas of muscular discomfort
  • Release knots and areas of restricted soft tissue
  • Prepare the muscles before physical activity
  • Support rehabilitation following certain injuries
  • Reduce tension caused by repetitive activities such as sitting, driving or lifting

For athletes, a Sports Massage can be particularly useful as part of a wider training and recovery routine.

When is Not Recomended

Sports Massage uses firmer pressure than many other forms of massage, so it isn’t suitable for everyone.

It may not be appropriate if you have certain medical conditions, including heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory spinal conditions, severe respiratory disorders, cerebral palsy, diabetes, epilepsy or very high blood pressure. It may also be unsuitable following a recent injury, such as whiplash or a muscle tear, or during pregnancy.

If you’re unsure whether Sports Massage is suitable for you, please contact us before booking. Your therapist can discuss your circumstances and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

If you have a serious medical condition or significant health concerns, please seek advice from your doctor before receiving massage therapy.

What to Expect from your Treatment

If it’s your first visit to YOU Massage, your therapist will begin with a new client consultation. You’ll be asked about your general health and well-being, as well as any areas of pain, discomfort, or previous injury.

This gives your therapist a better understanding of your body and allows them to tailor the treatment to you.

Sports Massage is generally firmer and more focused than a relaxing massage. You may experience some pressure or temporary discomfort while areas of tension are being worked on, but your treatment should always remain within a comfortable and manageable level.

Your therapist will check in with you throughout the treatment, so don’t hesitate to let them know if you’d like the pressure adjusted.

After your treatment, you may feel some temporary tenderness, particularly if areas of significant tension have been worked on. Staying hydrated, resting, and allowing your body time to recover can help.
