What Should You Wear?

Thai massage doesn’t use any oil and the treatment is done fully clothed. It is important that you wear loose comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely because your therapist will be moving you into different Yoga type positions and stretches. It is best to wear the type of clothes you would wear to a Yoga or exercise class.

What Is The Idea Behind The Treatment?

Like many Eastern massage techniques, Thai massage has it’s roots in Ayurvedic medicine. Part of this therapy is based on the idea of energy flowing through the body and when this energy flows freely and abundantly you are in perfect health. When there are blockages in the Sen (energy) lines the energy or in the case of Thai massage, wind, cannot flow freely.

Thai Massage works along these Sen lines to remove blockages and restore wind flow. It is first and foremost a way to improve energy flow and restore health, the bonus is that you get an amazing massage experience that leaves your body relaxed, stretched and invigorated.

What Will The Treatment Involve?

What Should You Expect From Your Thai Massage and what should the treatment involve? At YOU massage therapy we perform the treatment on a standard massage couch. Thai massage is always a full body treatment because it is holistic. You will usually begin lying on your back and the therapist will start at your feet. The treatment involves the therapist pressing up and down the body along the Sen lines using her palms, thumbs, forearms and knees. Some of these pressure points will be very deep, but should not be painful. Your Thai Massage Therapist will also use Yoga stretches. Do not worry if you are not very flexible, your therapist will only push the stretches as far as your joints and muscles allow. You will probably notice the therapist go backwards and forwards to different areas rather than the western way of working on one limb at a time

What Are The Benefits?

  • Increased flexibility with regular treatments
  • Releases tension from muscles
  • Relieves stress
  • Relaxing and yet invigorating
  • Releases tightness and stiffness
  • Stimulates the nervous system
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system
  • Increases energy flow

How Will I Feel After The Treatment?

Thai Massage is very different from the western style oil massage techniques and often leaves you feeling quite different as well. Thai Massage involves a lot of movement and stretching so it tends to leave you feeling quite energised rather than sleepy so it’s a great choice if you have things to do after your treatment.

Reasons Why Thai Massage May Not Be Suitable For You?

Thai massage is not suitable for everyone because of the amount of movement and stretching involved and the deep pressure points. It is not recommended if you have any of the following:

  • Severe arthritis or inflamed, painful joints– the stretches involved may be painful and unsafe.
  • Thrombosis– no massage should be done whilst you have a blood clot because of the risk of it being moved to the heart or brain.
  • Severe varicose veins– Thai massage is done through clothes, so it is very difficult to avoid pressing on the veins which could result in the vein bursting or an unknown blood clot being dislodged.
  • Repeated dislocation of joints– The area in question may be avoided, this will be discussed during your consultation.
  • Very poor flexibility– You may not get the best out of this treatment if you have very stiff joints because many of the movements and techniques will not be possible.

Summary

Thai Massage is a unique and totally different massage treatment. It is fantastic for people that do a lot of sports because it really stretches out the muscles and improves flexibility. It will leave you feeling incredibly relaxed and yet invigorated at the same time, allowing you to go and do other things with your day. If you’d like to try a different type of massage, give it a go and feel the benefits!
