Fascia is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue that provides support and protection for most structures within the human body, including muscle. Osteopathic theory proposes that this soft tissue can become restricted due to psychogenic disease, overuse, trauma, infectious agents, or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and corresponding diminished blood flow. Although fascia and its corresponding muscle are the main targets of myofascial release, other tissue may be addressed as well, including other connective tissue.
Most therapists provide some version of Myofascial Massage, available as a single treatment or as part of deep tissue massage. More than easing tension, the goal of Myofascial Massage is generally aimed at reducing pain and enhancing function. Many people prefer it to relaxation massage because the techniques are generally deeper, helping recipients feel good and more thoroughly worked over. Myofascial release therapy is a technique designed to soothe clients with soft-tissue ailments. Through a combination of stretching and massage, therapists work to relieve tension in the fascia.
It’s important to treat the whole body if possible due to the fact that when one part of the body is hurting normally means there is something else under lying and just like a car if you grease one part it only usually makes another part pop up that’s not functioning properly.
Regular massage for this will help to prevent and treat myofascial, just like normal massage for the muscles. Regular maintenance helps to maintain a healthy happy mind and body. Along with there being myofascial massage there is also myofascial release which focuses on the hard adhesions or tender points on the body, gentle pressure used to thoroughly soften and liquify hard or tender areas within the fluid components of connective tissue while simultaneously separating, straightening and stretching its fibrous components.
The skilful use of the hands in Myofascial Release Therapy is said to release disruptions in this fascial network that links every organ and tissue in the body with every other part. Pressure on the bones, muscles, joints and nerves is relieved in the process, and balance is restored. The release of tension once the body has responded to the massage therapy allows more functional flexibility and mobility of the muscles, fascia and associated structures. Release may also facilitate the emergence of negative or repetitive emotional patterns, which have interfered with the healing process.
Myofascial Release Therapy may be helpful for many physical problems, including:
- Back strain and general chronic or acute back pain
- Lumbar and thoracic pain
- Chronic cervical pain
- Dizziness, vertigo
- Carpel tunnel syndrome
- Fibromyalgia

Myofascial Release treatments usually take one hour and will include a physical evaluation before the treatment itself, for which the patient will be unclothed. A series of treatments may be necessary, although relief may be obtained in one session and it is generally suitable for people of all ages.
